A series of diary entries from Molly's grandfather, often revolving around events in the world and the mysterious deity up in the mountains.
Soon it will be that time of the year again and the village will be decorated for God Day. Right now, Molly goes to the bakery with her father and asks him about the bread he makes especially for the occasion. His herb mixture is a secret, he always says, but he plans to tell little Molly next year (it will be his last year with her, the healer said).
It remains to be seen how long he can keep his illness a secret from her.
Bjarne and Sven have already tied all the flowers and wheat into garlands, which they will hang up early tomorrow. Together with the other decorations, the village will look fantastic again, even if no god will descend upon us. The Black Beast will definitely not show up; that monster never comes to the village. Sometimes you can see it lurking at the edge of the forest in winter, but it has never exchanged a word with the villagers. Except for Molly.
One day, the beast came to one of the wheat fields with the badly injured body of a child in its mouth. It put the child down and disappeared back into the woods before farmer Janson could even get his shotgun.
Molly was only five years old at the time, and her little body was more damaged than many a front-line soldier ever saw: An arm had been torn off by sharp-toothed mouths, and her face was torn open by claws and teeth. She was more dead than alive when the monster had brought her out of the forest, and the other men were ready to go into the forest with shotguns and torches - but Molly told them in the few words she already knew that the Black Beast had saved her from a pack of wolves. I've been suspicious ever since, trusting my instincts more than a five-year-old girl's. But ever since, she has lovingly drawn pictures of the Black Beast, and I keep my suspicions to myself for the sake of peace - and her innocence. She doesn't need to be full of hate and distrust that early in her life.
The preparations for the big banquet on the afternoon of God Day are in full swing. I saw the woman from the pig farm carrying half a pig to the village hall; it's unbelievable how strong this woman is. Probably the only good thing about this holiday is that the food is hearty and plentiful. There are lots of delicious dishes and good company, just as a holiday should be. I wonder if people celebrated like this hundreds of years ago when the Goddess still lived here? With offerings of flowers and golden wheat, shared meals and honest joy of being alive?
Did the festivities last late into the night? Surely our ancestors were as exuberant as we are, grateful for the gifts of our goddess. Grateful that she has welcomed us into her sanctuary and given us so many gifts.
But today... today the wheat fields are sparsely vegetated and the fungus eats away many plants before they bloom. The harvest is meager, barely enough to justify our existence before the crown. The herds of horses left this once fertile valley hundreds of years ago, so we no longer have any reason to be protected as a production site from the King's Rule. If this continues, I'll have to send Molly to the city to get married as soon as she comes of age. Something she and her father won't like one bit.
I'll have to talk to him after tomorrow's festivities - I don't think a miracle will happen to save our valley from this creeping death from the mountains. He has to think about his daughter's future, even though he'll not be there to see it with his own eyes.
I wonder... Has the Black Beast put a curse on us and our land?
