It is winter. The snow lies high on the hills and the forest looks as bald as Lukas' grandfather. Every day I venture further into the forest, my shotgun in my hand, in anticipation of the black beast that will attack me. The mysterious lord of the forest and mountains tolerates no one in his realm, and I am not keen on getting to know his jaws - but food is scarce at this time of year, and between the trees the hares feel safe and are easy prey.

The further I go into the forest, the quieter it gets. Even the birds seem to fall silent. The air is heavy and sad, like a graveyard. If the people in the village weren't so hungry, and if I weren't a hunter, I would never set foot in this undergrowth. But my duties are clear and empty stomachs must be filled.

On one of my trips into the forest, I found the tracks of the black beast. I am always careful not to make too much noise and not to hunt more than necessary. But that day I noticed the beast's tracks; they led me straight to the foot of one of the mountains that make up the range. Normally the beast roams the forest, but high up in the mountains? What could it want up there? There is nothing up there but stone and ice.
Against my better judgement, I followed the creature's tracks. I didn't dare go any further than the foot of the mountain, and the snow began to fall much harder, but I had made a mental note of the place. There is a path up into the mountains where the layers of ice are thick and eternal. Even in summer it is piercingly cold up there and the ice never melts. How strange.

The following year I paid more attention to the black beast. Again, it was rarely seen at the edge of the forest as the snow began to fall. And again the tracks led up into the mountains. I wonder what the beast is doing up there. It doesn't hibernate, but there's something up there on the mountain that keeps drawing it there. I can't do more than speculate, because I'm not so tired of life that I'd climb up the rocks and possibly fall into the beast's clutches. I don't have a death wish, although curiosity burns within me like hot coals.

But even if I were to accuse the beast of some atrocity and happen to find proof for its rotten nature, what would happen? Who would put a divine monster on trial? Who has the power to judge such a creature and then carry out that judgement? Certainly not me.

The only thing left for me to do is to send the children away from the edge of the forest if they get careless again.
