 Golden Wheat Village 

Our village, sitting quietly on the edge of the mountains that protect the land from the ice storms of the White Void, is very, very old. Older than most cities, except the maybe capital. Our village has always remained small; the violent weather changes are too much for most people who move here. The summers are warm, but the winters are icy; so much, in fact, that the ice in the mountains never thaws completely.

Today we are the main suppliers of wheat. Our fields are large, and in the summer we often host migrant workers who move south to work in the winter. This botanical gold has become irreplaceable since the war began, just like the iron production in the east. Wheat, iron and people have become our currency.

However, we will not be able to hold our position for much longer. The king demands wheat in such quantities that we ourselves have problems getting enough to eat in the winter. The demands increase, as does the hunger in the land, while our crops spoil before we can gather them. The blessed land that our Goddess has so generously given us is slowly but surely dying. The earth does not yield as much as it did when I was a little boy. And it is getting less every year. We're starving.

My grandmother's grandmother used to talk about the horses that lived in the forest; whole herds of strong animals that would come out of their wildness at harvest time to help the farmers gather the wheat. Some of them even settled in the stables of the villagers for the whole year and bred the famous horses that are still considered true legends to this day.

Sadly, these noble animals left us long ago; they too were quickly to fade without the power of their goddess.

Without Epona, these forests and lands are dying. The plants wither and are no longer fertile, as are the animals and the people. Children have become rare, partly because of the war and partly because of the curse the Black Beast spread when it arrived here. A wave of death has engulfed these forests, black streams pouring down from the mountains as if a source of death were flourishing up there.

We can only hope that the Norns mean well in the end. That hope is all we have left.
