 The Norns

The myth of the Norns is very old. Three women whose origins lie somewhere between the divine and the fantastic. They sit together under the world tree Yggdrasil and weave the threads of fate that bind us all to life and death. We are all subject to their judgment, whether human or divine.

Urd is the Norn of the past. Her name means "destiny" or "that which has become". She is an old woman, her gaze constantly lost in the past.

Verdandi is the Norn of the present. Her name means "presence" or "that which is". She has the form of a youthful woman whose gaze is firm and unwavering. The here and now is her domain, and she lives in the moment.

Skuld is the Norn of the future. Her name means "future" or "becoming". Unlike Urd and Verdandi, she's seen as an unpredictable force with no love for humans or gods and a very hot temper. She wears a veil to hide her eyes.

I want to believe that these women were there for my granddaughter Molly when the wolves attacked her and saved my little girl. These mystic women rule over us all, mortal and immortal - for even the immortals have nothing to withstand their judgment. We all depend on the strings they weave for us, at their discretion. Do the Norns see something we cannot? Do they see the big picture, until the end of time?

When I was a young man I was told that in the heart of our forest there was a tree that's connected to Yggdrasil. An old ash tree, huge and lavishly green in the summer. It's said that if you write a wish on a piece of paper and tie it to the branches with red thread, you could get an audience with the Norns. I never dared to try. What could I want so badly that I'd go to these three women? These forces of nature in human form, behind whose gaze lies a world of secrets and divine power?

How much can you trust beings who can see to the end of time, I ask myself. They know so much more than we do and will make decisions for us that we cannot understand. In my opinion, this is a reason not to trust them at all, and yet to trust them completely. But maybe, just maybe, they have our best interests at heart.
